So it was the best of all worlds, I think, when I got into a band that had the ability to play in a progressive way but was open-minded about writing songs. People trying to sell hot dogs with your music. Whenever I do a session, I'll usually play a million different feels on the first take. When you changed your sound, what was the thought process behind that? Well, disagreements are part of life! If you're playing nice and relaxed in front of 20,000 people, they're not going to pick up any energy from that. The name wasnt settled yet. They wanted to make it on their own goalposts. What happened was wed put out our first record, Journey, and I think we sold a little over 100,000 records. And then the next three days after that, I was terrible to be around. I got sick and tired of doing that because I wasn't advancing. I did a one-off record with Sammy Hagar. They were of the generation we were speaking of earlier, that newer generation of fans. The guitar solos are note for note just like the album. And then you went on hiatus. I loved touring. You must put that in there, the preface, because its important. Now I feel like I have 100 percent of myself here, and Im more into it than Ive ever been into it. I got a phone call from Jon, and I could tell Neal was on the phone, cause I can tell when the line levels down, and I could hear him breathing, I think. Electronically, you have to be careful with that because you've got electronic components in there that are going to get smashed if you hit them too hard. I've been collecting material for it. Thats a tough question. RM: Of all the albums you've played on, which ones stand out in your mind? Ronnie Wood paid tribute to former bandmate Jeff Beck, saying he was untouchable when at his best.. What happened was, I was in Los Angeles, trying to get signed, with a band that I was in at the timeit was called the Alien Project, but it was also called Street Talk. Because since Mayhold on, Ive got the fax on my wall, in my studio. Ive read three reviews in my entire career, and they were all so painful that I decided not to read em anymore. Oh, most certainly, I was the new kid on the block with them. And I think that actually might have provoked Perry to go and do a solo record. I could never tune it properly, but then I put one of the cast rims on it and it made such a big difference, it's unbelievable. You made a couple of solo records after that. When a drummer gets calluses on his hands, they no longer chafe and they no longer blister, and thats fantastic. I wouldnt drink onstage, but Id get offstage, and when I got in the bus, thered be a chilled bottle of whatever vodka I was drinking, and Id start plowin into it. I look at it like this: as long as the solo went down, well-that's fine. We were all sitting in a room and Frank said, "Whoever comes through that door next will play bass in the movie," and Martin [Lickert] walked in. The one thing that was good was that it allotted me some time to get some personal issues in order with myself. I was confounded by that. So Columbia was pushing Journey to write more commercial music? Then I went out and got a bass drum and hi-hat and started playing with that. **. AD: R&B was happening, and traditional jazz. And we had differences of opinion in some areas, which eventually wore us down a bit. Every guy in the band would take about a 1O-chorus solo on each tune. And then [laughs] then I just got this unbelievable freaky drive, which shows the neurosis of the singer-songwriter. Thats what I want to be doing. And so I was always livin on that edge. But when you had that conversation, did you get the sense that they thought you were just going out on your own? Blues and progressive stuff was where I was at, yknow? Have you considered doing any teaching? Anybody who plays in a group must realize that everybody in the group must always be aware of everybody else. It was a pretty heavy situation. But if you don't have a name, then you'll always be "the Starship's drummer." So to me, the stone was already cracked. Look, youve got to remember, they didnt want to make it with a lead singer. And a lot of time spent together can chew on a friendship. I was completely overawed by Peter Green's playing, but I didn't think the band was backing him properly. Hearing the music rather than counting it is always the best way. I first met Zappa near the end of Retaliation, at a big rock and blues festival in Brussels. He was the drummer for eleven Frank Zappa albums. It sounded good. Another thing: I used to race bicycles when I was a kid, so I know about second wind and going into overdrive. I didnt! They don't understand it. With most rims, if they get dented a little bit, the head will never seat right and you'll never be able to tune the drum. The bigger the drum, the more damping you put inside it, and so you're playing less area anyway. For in- stance, The Grand Wazoo was almost a jazz big-band record. But in the extra tagged-on piece, I cut to stage right, facing me walking offstage, over the shoulders of Jon, Neal, Ross and Steve. It was actually overkill for me, but it was interesting because it was so different. But he was nice enough to call me, so I thought I'd go on down and listen to him. Everyone thought I would move back to L.A. , but the Starship required a drummer at that time so I joined them. Lets go fuckin be Journey again. How do you draw the line between playing freely enough for yourself and at the same time, being consistent enough that the rest of the band knows what you're doing? **Did you just realize at some point that you needed a frontman? And he pretty much came back and said, Yknow, this is a personal issue, and Im not gonna be pushed in a corner to get my hip fid. If you were to play maybe 8th notes at that point, people could hear it and under- stand it. RM: You're not opposed to electronic percussion in principle? I didnt have years of being in Santana under my belt, like Neal and Gregg. Tony Soprano thinks Journeys cool. He played with the Graham Bond Organisation, with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and later formed what has been described as the "seminal" jazz rock / progressive rock band, Colosseum. We argued over every second of it at one point. While all of that was going on, Zappa came to town and left a message for me to talk to him. And so now Ive been sober for the last nine months, and I never want to look back. When you have one or the other, its just not enough. They love the band enough to lay down on the sidewalk? Still am. Its been your band longer than it was ever Steves band. As soon as I went backstage after the Berkeley concert, the crew and band told me that Aynsley and Terry were there hanging out. Then I was playing lead lines on the violin. While I was with him we did the Pinupsalbum, and Diamond Dogs. But there was only so much I could get. Hes not just a Steve Perry emulator. Only one night did I have to have a shot of B12 with an anti-inflammatory. She was dying during the writing and recording of that record, and in the middle of doing vocals, she died. Was that a hard pill to swallow at first? That, to me, is completely amazing. They all worked in the daytime and they'd come together at night to play jazz. Sometimes I like to come out of a song, explode into life, and then create a dynamic situation. Now, I'm using two 20" bass drums, 10", 12" and 14" power toms on top of the kit, 16" and 18" floor toms, and an 8 x 14 wood-shell snare drum, which is really a good,.sounding drum. You had millions of fans and sold a ton of records. AD: It's the difference that's required by the song. Im so glad you came.
